Autumn dryness and lung
After autumn comes, we would feel dry. Clinical symptoms include dryness in nose and throat, cough with little phlegm, red tongue without coating, which are caused by autumn dryness. Autumn dryness has something to do with the climate in autumn. We can obviously feel that humidity reduces in autumn., it becomes very dry. Dryness is one of the six exogenous pathogenic factors (pathogenic wind, cold, hotness, dampness, dryness and summer-heat) in TCM. Dryness is featured by roughness, and is harmful to body fluid. When autumn comes, after the consumption caused by hotness in summer, Qi and body fluid would be easily hurt then. “People are weak though they are not ill in summer”, weak means deficiency of Qi and yin. If at this point, the body is affected by exogenous pathogenic dryness, the deficiency of qi and yin would be aggravated. Clinical symptoms include cough with little phlegm, red tongue without tongue coating, these symptoms are similar to those of lung cancer that we observed in clinical practice, but it dose not mean you may get lung cancer., just similarity.
In TCM, lung is called “huagai”or “jiaozang”.”huagai”refers to the magnificent canopy on the chariot that protected the emperor from wind and rain, lungs are in the upper part in the body and they are like a magnificent canopy that can protect our body. Through the mouth and nose, the get contacted with the outside, they can protect the body from the exogenous pathogenic factors. They are susceptible to the invasion of the six exogenous pathogenic factors. Pathogenic cold and dryness would first hurt the lung. Lungs are called “jiaozang”, “jiao” Means fragile, they may be affected by pathogenic cold, heat and easily by dryness. Lungs like moistness and hate dryness. So in autumn the organs most easily be affected by dryness are lungs. In addition, there are also internal causes, happiness, anger, worry, anxiety, fright and shock, which can also cause the yin deficiency in lungs, it is called internal dryness.
